How using a marketing approach can help open data

One of the biggest barriers to the growth of the open data movement in my opinion is that nearly every open data related meeting/event is still comprised primarily of data geeks and app developers. The language that is used by this community (e.g. machine readable data, open access, genomes, geo-spatial, etc…) confuses the typical non-geek beyond hope. If you don’t capture the minds of the non-geeks out there to stimulate demand, how on earth are open data initiatives (e.g. data.gov and data.gc.ca) going to stay alive?

I personally think that Google Insights for Search is one of the most under appreciated free marketing research tools out there. I can’t teach you all that much in 60 seconds about this one, but hopefully enough to get all of you newbies interested. Stay tuned for another more “advanced” video about this tool down the road.

The importance of timing during a brand experience

Over the last year of getting on Air Canada flights, I have noticed the first thing mentioned to passengers upon boarding the plane is “Welcome aboard Air Canada , the #1 airline in North America according to….blah blah blah magazine”.

I’d like to point this out as an example of poor timing and what not to do when trying to deliver a brand experience.
