Doing things differently in government

Two weeks ago I managed to seriously fracture my humerus bone. I had to have surgery to put a titanium plate with 8 screws into my arm so that the bone could heal properly over the course of the next 6 months. While the benefit of having surgery after a fracture is not having to wear a cast, the discomfort and limited mobility is quite similar. After 4 days at the hospital I thought I was ready to go back to my regular routine (those that know me also know that inactivity is not exactly my friend).

Your youth segment is not “really” chatting on Facebook anymore

Let me explain what I mean. Here’s a brief history of Facebook from my own personal experience.

I joined Facebook sometime in mid 2006. It was only open to colleges and universities, quickly followed by cities.  Up until that point, the main conversation platforms for myself and my close friends other than in-person conversations, email and the phone were tools such as ICQ followed by MSN chat. Within a few months the majority migrated to Facebook even though it was a step back (lack of chat feature initially) at the same time it was a step forward (social element: 2-way, one-to-many platform, photo sharing, etc…).  

Unsubscribe vs. Opt-out

Our organization, CEPSM,  recently ran a database “cleaning” email campaign to remind our e-communications subscribers that they are in full control of what they want to receive and how often. While at first instinct nobody wants to see their database decline in numbers, I’m sure most people would agree that clogging your audiences’ email in-boxes with info they do not want is much worse over the long term.

I thought I had my email terminology down pat, however I recently came across a blog post from our wonderful email service provider (Blue Sky Factory) which explained the difference between “unsubscribes” and “opt-outs”. I must shamefully admit, for the longest time I thought they were the same thing. They’re not.
